Costa Ricans are more ecologically aware than most of the world. For years the government and its people have succeeded in keeping Costa Rica environmentally pristine, slowing development and sustaining natural habitats. Mareas follows this rich tradition and is committed to ecological consciousness and providing a healthy environment for your stay.

Going for the Green - Green Practices at Mareas:
  • Organic and locally grown foods are served which reduces packaging and improved the quality of our meals. In fact, many foods are grown on site.
  • Recycle programs; from composting to sorting we reuse material whenever possible.
  • Native species of plants were used for landscaping instead of imported ornamentals.
  • Landscaping is watered from steam fed sources
  • Biodegradable products are used for laundry and cleaning supplies.
  • Our water conservation program gives our guests options for frequency of sheet and towel changes
  • Our pool is salt water which uses no chlorine. This is not only better for the environment it is also better for the swimmers because it does not irritate or dry your skin or eyes.
  • We support “green” vendors whenever possible.
Giving Back - Mareas Turtle Hatching Program:

To preserve the reproduction of native turtles Mareas is now participating with the marine biologist at the park to closely monitor and regulate some of the more famous nesting sites in Playa Hermosa. From May to September Mareas has a special program for guests to volunteer in the collection of turtle eggs for the hatchery as well assisting in the release of the baby turtles back to the ocean. Olive Ridley and Hawksbill Turtles can be seen laying their eggs on night visits to the beach between May and November. The largest numbers arrive on the waning moon, usually in September
